Unknown soldier is the movie that finns love. Me like many others almost knew every line. It is based Väinö Linnas book with the same name. It tells about one machine gun company in world war two. It is more then a book or movie. It yells actually for peace. And it tells story young men with different backrounds.

Here is the end of the movie. The music is Jean Sibelius: Finlandia-hymn.

Land of corruption

September 20, 2009 at 4:08 | In Finns and politics | Leave a Comment

In Finland we have been proud of one thing. We don´t have any corruption. In last months we have had a serious wake up -call. We indeed have corruption. Many politicians got many from the businessmens to their campaings.

In past years nobody thought that it was wrong. I mean politicians. It was a countrys way. Even left wing parties has got money from unions.

Politics has gone in Finland wrong way. It is much about politicians privet life, not what they are doing for voters.

Here is our PM talking about EU. Don´t fell a sleep.

Finland, land of heavymetal

September 10, 2009 at 4:08 | In Finns, Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

As we all know, Finland is a land of heavy metal music. There are many heavy bands from Finland which are quite popular in their own scene. Megastars propably not. HIM is the most popular heavy band from Finland although real metalmaniacs says that HIM isn´t a real heavy band. Hard rock anyway.

And of course you might know Nightwish. Vocalist is now from Sweden but it is a finnish band.

Heavymetal hasn´t always been popular in Finland. The scene started really at the 90s. I mean finnish bands. Foreign metalbands has been always popular. Metallica loves Finland and finns Metallica.

Why finns love metalmusic. Becose it is real. In metalmusic men are men and music is music. Finns really don´t care glamour or something else stupid.

Finns and Swedes

August 31, 2009 at 4:08 | In Finland and other nations | Leave a Comment

Sweden is a neighbour that finns “love to hate”. There is always a little bit competition between finns and swedes. Best you can see that in sports. Usually Sweden is in the sports the lucky one. Finns always talk swedes as gladstone ganders. We finns by the way love Donald Duck and you surely know now why.

If you look back again in history Sweden ruled Finland for centuries. In 1809 Russia took Finland from Sweden. Sweden is still like Finlands big brother. Everything comes first in Sweden then to Finland. Finns love Swedens royalties and they visit often Finland.

There are still about 200 000 hundred people in Finland who talk swedish as their motherlanguage. Swedish talking people have great influence in Finland.

Some finns says that they are better folk, in swedish “bättre folk”. In finnish schools everyone have to study swedish and many don´t like that. And they have different universities for swedish talking people and more priviledgies. I don´t know if that is always true but many seems to think so.

Swedish talking minority is getting even smaller. And russian talking minority bigger. We don´t know what happends in the future. Russians may be a bigger minority in the future in Finland.

Here is a video for you too about Finlands and Swedens separition.

When you don´t win, you can be a finn

Finland didn´t get any medals from IAAF World championships in Berlin. It wasn´t the first time. And propably not the last time.

Finns love especially javelin throw but this time the best finn, Tero Pitkämäki, was just sixth.

A small country can´t win hundreds of medals. That is a fact but some in Finland can´t understand that. Even a one medal is a good result. Usually medals are from javelin.

If we look back history, Finland has had good runners. Like Paavo Nurmi or Lasse Viren. Last was Lasse Viren in seventies. Usually finns were quiet and strong at competition. But now it is different. Athletes have so many excuses that you just can´t remember all of them.

But finns love sports like almost all nations. Athletes are always bigger stars then writers or actors. And they have huge pressure becose Finland is small country and finns have great expectations for them.

You can see it very clearly in ice hockey. Finns can lead in last period like 5-2, but in last minute they collapse and lose. Self confidence is a hard thing for finns, we just can´t believe that we can win.

Finns won icehockey championships last and only time in -95. Ice hockey players are huge stars in Finland. You propably now Teemu Selänne or Saku Koivu. But will finns ever win again in icehockey games?

But in this video javelin thrower Tero Pitkämäki is a winner.

But in motorsports finns are kings. There was in the 80s this slogan: If you want to win, hire a finn. And especially in rally there are so many worldchampionships for finns that I can´t even remember all of them. Maybe we win in motorsports becose we have so much space in here and very bad weathers in winters.

The most beautiful girl in Finland

When I write this Miss Universum contest is on its way. Our girl there is Essi Pöysti. I think she is more beautifull Miss Finland then Miss Finlands for years.

But we all know that southamerican babes will won Miss Universum contest. Years for blondes are long gone away.

Finnish women are still very natural ones. And the our era of silicontits and plastic surgery that isn´t just enough to win beauty contests.

But there are beauty contest winners from Finland late years. Armi Kuusela was Miss Universum 1952. Believe or not, in Finland they are still writing about it. Latest succesfull Miss Finland was Lola Odusoga. She was 3rd in a year -96 Miss Universum-contest if I don´t remember wrong. She was a half african so she was quite unusyal Miss Finland-winner.

Still in the 80s Miss Finland-contest was a big thing in Finland. Almost everybody watched it from TV. But now there are too many beauty contests. Still Miss Finlands are huge celebrities.

Good luck, Essi!

We finns are small nation. That´s why we write a loit about our few worldwide celebrities. Or our few worldwide celebrities who are still alive. Becose most of foreigners know composer Jean Sibelius but he died at the 50s. Or we finns at least think so.

Those who like sports may know formuladrivers Kimi Räikkönen or Mika Häkkinen. Or mayber you know directors Renny Harlin or Aki Kaurismäki. And of course you might know Martti Ahtisaari, our ex-president who won Nobel Peace Price. At last, we finns thoughted.

Earlier years finns underestimated succesfull finns in a big world. Our first formulachampion Keke Rosberg can tell you much about that. But not anymore. We know that we are living in a world where you don´t have too many friends. You have to be proud what you got.

But we have many finnish origin celebrities too. And we interested about them even more, becose they are like our own boys and girls. Especially you can find them from USA.

Many finns moved there mostly 19th and 20th century. They have said that one of US founding fathers, John Morton, was a finnish origin. Some said that even Pamela Anderson have finnish roots. Serial killer Eileen Wuornos had finnish roots for sure. You know it for lastname. And the last one, astronaut Tim Kopra, who is calling in this video to Tarja Halonen, our president.

Finland and summer

July 29, 2009 at 4:08 | In Finland and natue | Leave a Comment

One thing I love about Finland is summer. Nature is always near. Even in the cities.

These swamps I taped in place called Asikkala.

Swamps was almost all killed in the last century but now you can see them in many places. It´s almost finlands national bird.

Usually people around the world don´t know that Finland is a country of lakes. We have thousands lakes. So we have much else then snow and Lapland.
